Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that he and Lorenza Newton have divorced after 30 years of marriage.
Del Toro was quizzed about his personal life after he attended the Oscars with his friend and screenwriter Kim Morgan before picking up the awards for Best Picture and Best Director for The Shape of Water.
“I separated in February and I got divorced in September, but few people knew,” he told Reforma.

He added that he had avoided public comments about his split to avoid gossip, and added that he was collaborating with Morgan on a new project.
The pair met and started work together at the end of last summer, several months after the separation from his then-wife.
Del Toro and Newton have two children together, daughters called Marisa and Mariana.

On winning his first Best Director Oscar last weekend, Del Toro said: “I am an immigrant.
“The best thing our industry does is to help erase the lines in the sand when the world tries to make them deeper.”
He added on winning Best Picture: “Growing up in Mexico, I thought this could never happen. It happens.
“And I want to tell you, everyone who is dreaming of a parable of using genre fantasy to tell the things that are real in the world today, you can do this.
“This is a door. Kick it open and come in.”
